TOPIC: Mt. Gorichen Expedition in Arunachal Pradesh

Mt. Gorichen Expedition in Arunachal Pradesh 7 years, 5 months ago #198

As per a news report in Echo of Arunachal on Oct 7, a 12-member expedition team to Mt Gorichen had crossed the glacier point and set up camp 111 successfully. Given the fair weather condition, the team will go for summit attempt tomorrow or day after instead of Oct 10/11 which was planned earlier, according to a report from the Gorichen base camp.

On Sept 22 last, the expedition team led by Dr K R Romeo was flagged off by Governor Gen J J Singh from Raj Bhavan, Itanagar. Mountains in Arunachal Himalayas are considered pious. Hence, the team members offered puja to the respective deities at Chillipam Gompa on Sept 23, Thubchog Gatseling Gompa the next day and finally at Tawang Monastery on Sept 25 before finally hitting the trek route at Jang, the last road head accompanied by a convoy of yaks and high altitude porters.

The latest report for the Gorichen Base Camp stated that all the climbing members are fit and fine and they have been able to climb and establish camp 1, camp 11 and the summit camp successfully. The only hiccup they faced was the failure of communication system. The liaison officer of the expedition, K N Damo had to retract back to Mago village from the base camp (16000 ft) for back up of this all important communication system.

Mt Gorichen is a technical peak and only seasoned climbers can make it to the top (6488 mtr). During the last Indian Army Expedition to Mt. Gorichen, two of their best mountaineers lost their lives and the third one was critically injured while negotiating a climb between camp 11 and the summit camp.

Mt Gorichen is the 3rd highest peak in North East with the exception of Sikkim Himalayas. The other two unclimbed and virgin mountain peaks located in Arunachal are Mt Kangto (7090 mtr) and Mt Nyegikangsang (7050 mtr).

This is the first civilian expedition to Mt Gorichen, organized by the State department of Sports & Youths Affairs in collaboration with the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. If successful, it will be a curtain raiser for high altitude trekking and mountain expeditions to Arunachal Himalayas.

Hi Friends,

Just read on Northeast Today website that the Mount Gorichen expedition team successfully scaled the breathtaking peak around 7 am Tuesday (9-Oct) after launching the final assault at 2:30 am. The team’s liaison officer KN Damo informed over telephone that the team members are safe and healthy. “The first party of expedition comprising two members returned to Mago and contacted us to inform about the successful climb,” Damo said. “We expect the remaining team members to reach Mago on October 14.” The team led by Dr. K R Romeo is expected to reach Jang village on October 17. The members will be flagged in by the Tawang deputy commissioner the next day.

Found this info about the team-

This expedition has been organized jointly by the state’s sports and youth affairs (SYA) department and the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (APIMF).

The 13-member team which has mountaineers from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Indo Tibetan Border Police, is led by Dr. K Romeo Meetei

The team includes three Everesters-Anshu Jamsengpa, Tine Mina and ITBP inspector Lobsang Sherpa. Jamsengpa and Sherpa have reached the summit of Mount Everest Summit twice. Sherpa has 12 successful expeditions under his belt.

There are five mountaineers from Arunachal Pradesh, including K.N. Damo, Deputy Resident Commissioner, Delhi, who is the liaison officer and field advisor of the team, and Nima Lama. Also there's a six-member support team of Sherpas from Darjeeling.

According to EchoOfArunachal.com, the Mt Gorichen expedition team arrived in Itanagar yesterday after successfully scaling one of the toughest mountains in the Himalayan range.

The 12-member team led by Dr K R Romeo Meetei successfully scaled Mt Gorichen 6488 mtr on October 9 last. The first mountaineer trio to reach the summit was Anshu Jamsenpa followed by Shanti Rai and Joran Sanga.

Field Advisor cum LO K N Damo coordinated the expedition very well but he had his share of anxiety when he lost all communication with the team members for four continuous days. That time the team members were at Summit Camp and the weather had gone from bad to worst. When he was about to press the panic button for search and rescue operation, he got the good news about the successful summit from the ITBP posted at Mago on 11 Oct evening.
