Satellite phones required for mountaineering expedition? 7 years, 4 months ago #267

Are satellite phones required for a mountaineering expedition? How to obtain them? Are they available for hire/lease?

Hi,

Weather to use a Satellite phone or not is more of a personal choice for the expedition , its not a necessity but good to have for certain climbs if they are in the remote area's, not so common route's , climbs where rescue's are not common and difficult to carry out and may be recommended for 7500 mts + peaks .

Most of the big commercial expeditions attempting peaks 7500 mts + , will have Sat phone these days . Yes you can buy it and lease it out . In India you can apply through INMARSAT , a government recognized body which gives you the permission to use a SAT phone . There are private operators also in Delhi & Bombay who can provide you with these phones and do all the running around for you in terms of the paper work .
