" But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live. Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom. Only a person who risks is free. The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; and the realist adjusts the sails." - William Arthur Ward

Assuming you are not attempting alpine style climbing, I think these are the necessary things to carry in your backpack:-

1) Head Lamp with extra batteries
2) Camera with extra batteries
3) At least 2 Litres of water (preferably 2 litres in a Hydration Sack, and another litre in bottle)
4) Hydration Sack
5) Wide Mouth Water Bottle
6) Cat- 3/4 UV Sun Glasses
7) Energy Bars, Chocolates, Nuts, Juice, etc- enough for the march to the summit & back to the summit camp.
8) Emergency Blanket

Equipment (Depends on the peak, snow condition, technicalities, etc)

1) Ice Axe
2) Snow Boot + Crampons
3) Gaiter
4) Hiking Pole (optional)
5) Harness + Descender + Carabiners + Descender + Sling + Jumar
6) Rope

Am I missing out something ? Others, please add :)
Cheers.
